Around the hearthfire tonight, Tarostar tells us quite a legendary myth about an evil witch named Grandma Yaga. This tale is combined with the symbolism and the story of the Eastern European lore of Baba Yaga, in which you will find slight deviations between general Slavic lore, Russian and Gypsy lore.

Baba Yaga is sometimes depicted as a singular character and at other times, three evil sisters.

When you’ve traveled the magical path for a number of years, you’re bound to come across your own version of Baba Yaga out there in human form. They are best left alone to stew in their own evil rather than kicking over hornet’s nests.

Below you will find the tale of Grandma Yaga, as told by an Elder, Tarostar V*. All text is copyright 1984 by Rollin G. Bennien, filed at the Library of Congress and printed here with permission:

This page, as told by Tarostar V* is about breaking a hex or a curse and sending it back to the one who leveled it at you. You will find two such spells which can be used on Wotan’s Day – which is Wednesday, under the influences of Mercury. The symbolism of Wotan brings forth a heavier aspect of the influence he channels here through the lens of Mercury.

As we said before in previous posts, we experience the power of the old gods through proper timing of spells as the planetary forces are how the powers of the old gods are focused on the earth. To everything, there is but a time and a season!

As you can tell from these two spells – one spell uses the sympathetic magic method of “breaking” something – the broken candle being the symbolic action of what you direct the elementals to do – the theory being to break the curse in this case and the psychic connection to that individual. That is but one method.

The second method is shown as well, in which the sympathetic action is performed in a backwards order. This time, by burning the candle from the opposite end instead of the right end – showing the elementals what you want them to do. In this case, the theory is that what you want them to do is burn away the connection, from you to them, so that the negative magnetism has no where to go but re-bound back to the sender.

Heed well, dear reader, for we tell now of a serious tale around the witch’s hearthfire.

At the Wolfa Coven, we keep these dual-color candles on hand in case they are called for. The pantry of a witch always finds many curious items used within the religion, both high and low.

Wicca is indeed a joyous faith! Tell us your thoughts on Page 18 here and what you feel you have received from it. Any insights brewing? Any memories to share of joy you’ve found in the religion of Wicca?

At the Wolfa Coven, we certainly have had many beautiful memories and I can recall fondly many happy times spent in the rapture of ritual. For me, some of my happiest memories are from May Eve or Beltane which is the season of Wine & Roses. This time has always been very special to me and I look back in nostalgia at all the many experiences and blessings I have gained from it.

One special thing I have always enjoyed doing is setting up a Maypole for a special dance outdoors. While dancing the Maypole isn’t part of the Sabbat ritual proper, we tend to do it before or after Sabbat with much joy and laughter – but at the same time, with heart and meaning.

Beltane weekend always brought, in times past, many years going to local May-Day Festivals with shopping at vendors, feasting and watching many live performances celebrating the welcoming of the coming Summer.

Then, when it comes time for ritual, the Beltane Sabbat wording is so moving and beautiful and has even struck happy tears of contentment and love in the beauty of it all.

The wearing of seasonal crowns and chaplets during the dances and the tossing them to the flames for luck along with leaping over the fire – these are but moments I visit with nostalgia, and look forward to in anticipation for the coming year as we drink the wine and dance with the symbol of the Rose being the main theme.

Sitting beside the Witch’s Hearthfire, you will frequently hear may wise tales, fables and even parables told in story form to express a craft-truth to be learned. The battle between the opposites is but ever raging. It is our job to learn the wisdom in achieving the Tenet of Harmony and the Tenet of a Balanced Life. Each witch must learn the correct balance in all things in order to ever work on achieving an harmonious existence with all things. You can learn the Tenets of the Faith from The Sacred Pentagraph, as laid down by the Elders of the tradition, for it be a way to implement Wiccae Philosophy into our lives.

This very tale, as beautifully told by Tarostar, tells us in poetic form the battle to achieve these ideals by Snow White and Red Rose. The tale of the Bard in a religion such as Wicca, told by the hearthfire, provides us with prose and imagery to contemplate on and come out from that quiet meditation with new wisdom and insight.

What insight did this tale bring to you? Please share with us what you feel you have learned from it!

A witch’s familiar – whether a cat or bird, is but such a blessing a witch and their coven. This tale is one witch’s telling of a black cat named Thirteen and is probably reminiscient of memories you may have heard from your own Witch Elders around the Hearthfire of tales they had about the special animals they cared for and what they meant to them.

At times, some witches find a special bond with animals and they feel that the animal can understand them, and they can understand that animal as well.

In our coven, the Wolfa Coven, we have many “Cat Moms” who baby their cat friends just as much as this poetry by Tarostar V* tells about – sometimes they are spoiled rotten of course, but it brings great joy to the witchy cat-moms who love them and have communication with them.

We are all children of the Gracious Goddess – both human and our animal kin. Blessed Be to Thirteen, and to any familiars you may have in your own life.

Today around the hearthfire we learn of “The Witches Challenge.” Divination, the Psychic Arts and the foretelling of portends be but the theme.

Within The Sacred Pentagraph, we have many forms of divination taught, within coven, and also when reading for others. In coven, the skills of the medium is encouraged. These skills could practiced during weekly Sitting Circles of the Seance variety and can be fine tuned if at least one member can serve as a medium, or in circle when Scrying in the Goddess’ Name or Scrying in the Gods’ Name. There is a special ritual of mediumship performed as well by the High Priestess as the coven calls down the Goddess to speak through the High Priestess every third Full Moon as well. Another potent form takes place each year as part of the Hallowmas Sabbat in which the yearly Watchword of the coven is divined to portend the future. This word becomes a secret password for entrance into the magical circle for the year.

But this special poetic teaching, written here below by Elder of the Sacred Pentagraph, Tarostar V*, and shared with you here tells of a different tale … Sit closely by the hearthfire and learn of this wisdom known as The Witches Challenge!

In the areas of the Psychic Arts and metaphysics, many boast of their witchy prowess in public spaces. We’ve all seen it … and a Witch that has been around the block a few times can tell you how they’ve all heard wondrous claims. Most of the time, these claims seem to be spoken in order to be dismissive of others they feel are taking the place on their own self-created throne so they can grab the spotlight. They pound their fists and say their way is the only way. Well, instead of causing a scene or being rude yourself back which never helps, it is recommended you ask them to kindly “well, show us the goods then!” If you hear many excuses why they cannot show you the goods then, you have all the answers you need.

Many claim to be the “Real Witches” and go on about the depth of the arcane teachings and initiations they have received. Many will tell you how they have the real contact with the Guides on the astral planes. Well, okay then Witch/Psychic/Medium, show us thy goods and prove it!

Mileage in Witchcraft be far more important than pedigree or lineage if you have no real power to back up thy boasting.

Basically, this teaching around the hearthfire shows us, that those who have the power, need not boast of their exhaustive skills in the psychic and magical arts. If someone does have the power, you will know it! It exudes from them. There will always be those that dismiss others with these skills and those around them out of pure jealousy. Don’t play games or argue back with endless questions and banter, just ask them to prove thy claims. If they have the goods, as they boast they do, then you will soon know it!

This be another spell of Venus and is a candle spell.

I have learned that when we talk about magical charms, many times, they are meant to be sung over. Incantations spoken in rhyme as a song has quite a hypnotic effect on the mind and it doesn’t take long for you to get into the correct frame of mind for the release of the power from the body when doing so. The tools and trappings used in these spells help to not only set the right mood, but also work to attract the correct elementals of the Grey Area (Astral Plane) by the scents used, the symbols placed and the actions involving these quite simple supplies. Proper timing is important to, as the Planetary energies behind them are how the old gods reach us.

This spell uses not only concentration and the mental gymnastics of the mind, but also giving to the intended person the item in which you’ve charmed.

Hopefully by now, dear readers, you have learned a little something about witchery and the arts of casting spells from these fantastic old spells set to rhyme by Elder Tarostar V* and the corresponding commentary and blog posts here around the hearthfire. Sitting here and typing this out, I am sitting directly across from my own hearth and I am looking forward to, in the coming months, warming that hearth with the first hearthfire of the Autumn season. Blessed Be!

Performance of a simple candle spell is one of many teachings to learn at the Hearthfire of an Elder Witch.

This spell teaches us in a poetic way the technique of casting a simple spell using a white candle and a simple tree-thorn and performed on a Monday during the Waxing Moon. It is also best to look at the Moon in signs as well in order to see the astrological effects the Moon is being highlighted by. A good guide for this would be The Magic Candle by Charmaine Dey.

You must also be sure to use the proper occult oil to anoint this candle that corresponds with your wish. I have written about the Sacred Oils and Holy Oils before and how they become the fluid condensers of thought-power in order to affect the Astral Grey area. The link above will give you further information and resources if this is new to you.

Examples of some of the Sacred Oils – these are for each of the 12 Planets and were lovingly made for our coven by the fabulous ladies at the occult store, Moon Raven Alley,

The proper chant is utilized as well to fuel the spell. This particular page gives us three different ones that help to create a hypnotic effect on the mind and can give you inspiration on creating your own incantations for use in candle spells

It is our hope you use this spell, part of The Sacred Pentagraph, to aid in the concentration of your wishes. Tell us what you think & discuss! Enjoy & Blessed Be!

Below you will find this Candle Spell as told to you, instructed by the Hearthfire….

Today, you also get a bonus photo below. This is a basic altar photo of a magical spell-working as performed by one High Priestess in Sacred Pentagraph in which she had created a few magical charms for initiates of the coven. Some of the charms she made will be distributed to some distant initiates at the Hallowmas Sabbat.

This next spell is performed on a Thursday, the day of Jupiter, during the waxing moon to increase and grow prosperity & money.

This piece of sorcery requires Horn of Plenty Oil along with Money Drawing Incense in the casting. If you have the skill and proper knowledge, you can make these. If not, visit a local well-stocked occult store to have these made. Our local occult store that is connected to us that we buy our additional supplies, Moon Raven Alley, can manufacture these oils and incenses for customers if they are not in stock. Black beans and a royal green candle will be of use for you in this manufacture.

One piece of advice to share with you around this witch’s hearthfire: Jupiterian and Jovial energy expands and grows that which you already have. It is prudent that you have seed-money in order to work with Jupiter-energy. If not, better results will be obtained by working a spell under the influence of the Mercurial or Venusian lens to open the door to new opportunities and possibilities. These are the pieces of magical lore you learn at the hearthfire of the witch.

May the waxing of Jupiter bring you a mighty increase! So mote it be!
