The pentagram has so much symbolism behind it and on this page by Tarostar, we find a formula to aid us in the spell-making process.
In the year 1854, Eliphas Levi published what his own ideas of the pentagram were in Transcendental Magic:
“The pentagram expresses the domination of the mind over the elements, and it is by this symbol that we enchain the demons of air, the spirits of fire, the specters of water, and the ghosts of the earth. Armed with this symbol and properly prepared, you can see the infinite by using that faculty which is like the eye of your soul, and you will have the legions of angels and columns of demons serve you.”
-Eliphas Levi, Transcendental Magic. 1854
On this earth sphere, the invoking pentagram, drawn widdershins, draws in power that is called to it and the banishing pentagram, drawn clockwise, will banish and send out the forces summoned by the use of this sacred symbol.

At my own hearthfire, a book I turn to from time to time was written by a famed Theosophist, Franz Hartmann, in 1904 called Magic White and Black and was one recommended to me early on by one of my mentors in Wicca. It spends a great deal of time explaining what we have come to call “The Witches Pyramid” that you will find hinted at in the Powers of the Pentagram and gives me additional themes to meditate on if you are looking for supplementary information on this topic.
The magical words you will find on this page from Tales from a Witch’s Hearthfire; Noscere, Audere, Vellie, Tacere and Ire not only invokes each of the four classifications of elementals, but gives us a set of tools to bring spells to fruition.
Never forget the final stage of the Pentagram – Ire, “to go.” For understanding the powers of Coagula and Solve – concentration is important, but we must also remember the release.
Below you will find Powers of the Pentagram, as told by an Elder, Tarostar V*. All text is copyright 1984 by Rollin G. Bennien, filed at the Library of Congress and printed here with permission:
